TOEFL speaking question 6 part 2 (3 samples)

Posted in samples  by: admin
February 23rd, 2010

Here are 3 samples of the TOEFL ibt Speaking question 6.

In this question, you are asked to summarize a lecture on an academic topic. From my experience as a teacher, this is on of the hardest question in the entire test, as it puts your note taking abilities to a test. You have to make sure that you take as much notes as you can, so that when the time to prepare comes, you have a maximum of material to work with. As wit all the other questions, you will only hear the lecture once, so it is imperative that you take notes.

Most of the time, this question provide you with two examples, studies, life experience etc. Your job is to summarize

1: The main idea of the lecture
2: the two examples provided by the lecturer.
3: Some pr the supporting details provided by the professor.

You should also try to summarize by paraphrasing the content of the lecture. That is to say find other ways to say the same thing as the rofessor did. This is supposed to demonstrate your ability to retell information using your own words. So in other words, don;t repeat integrally what the lecturer has said.

I wish you the best of luck!!!

In Day 3, I’ll be adding some sweet FX to fill out the beat a bit, along with two more synth patches – a simple sampled vocal ah sound in NN-XT and a cheeky little blip with a lot of swing on it, for which I’ll use the ReGroove mixer.

Awesome!

TOEFL SPEAKING question 4 part 2 (3 samples)

Posted in samples  by: admin
January 8th, 2010

YOU WILL FIND THE TEXTS JUST A LITTLE FURTHER DOWN, AFTER THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Here are 3 sample questions for the TOEFL IBT 4th speaking section. As you probably know, the speaking part of the test is divided into 6 different sections. The following video deals with the FOURTH section (Read, listen and summarize).

In this question you are required to read a short passage about an academic topic (business, psychology, geology, biology etc.) You then have to listen to a lecture related to that topic. The response pattern is similar to the 3rd question because you have to first summarize BRIEFLY the text and then link it to the professors lecture. Most of the time, the professor will give examples that illustrates the content of the reading passage. The lecturers might give examples from their own lives, or provide examples from experiments that were made, studies that were conducted, etc.

Your job is to LINK the text with the examples in the lecture. And here is how you should proceed:

1:
You should briefly summarize the content of the reading passage. Basically state the topic and the main idea.

2:
You should then get into the lecturers presentation. Remember to start that second part of your answer with a sentence CLEARLY stating that what you are about to say comes from the lecture. Use a sentence like (In the lecture, the professor discusses OR The lecturer suggests two examples in her presentation about) Just make sure that you indicate the transition between the text and the lecture, as it is KEY to get all your points for organization.

3:
Make sure you give summarize using all of the examples te lecturer provides. If he/she gives only one it will be divided into two parts, so make sure you cover both. But most of the time, there will be 2 rather simple examples that you will summarize in your own words.

4:
The concluding sentences here is quite important and you can use it to further strengthen the link between the lecture and the reading passage. So finish by saying something like (So that is how the professor illustrated the concept of OR Those two examples are perfect illustrations of the idea of )

And as usual, be extra energetic, articulate and coherent. Remember that the speaking part is highly subjective (it is actually a person that will judge you and you have to impress them, so try not to sound boring)

HERE ARE THE TEXTS

Chant in Poetry

Chant is the rhythmic speaking or signing of words or sounds, often primarily on one or two pitches called reciting tones. It is one or the features that affect greatly in poetry. There are two ways that a chant is formed in poetry. A chant is formed accidentally when inspired by a certain action. The other method is by deliberate action, when a poet deliberately creates a situation to think of a poetical sentiment, and this is more widely used in making of a chant.

Ecosystem

This is a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment. They try to preserve the environment by a system of interacting and interdependent relationships. Thus, the environment is harmed intentionally or unintentionally through the living and nonliving components of the system. In this case, resilience allows the ecosystem to return to its original shape after an unpleasant situation

The Use of Media

There are many techniques that the media use to send messages to the audience. For example, some advertisement companies portray positive traits of their products so they appear to be the best. However, some advertisement companies isolate some messages from their original context to twist and usually to contradict the intended meaning. This technique is called quoting out of context and is considered false attribution in which a certain passage is removed from its surroundings to distort its intended meaning.

December 31st, 2009

Playing around with video mode a bit more, trying to get more comfortable with it.
I’m pleased with the results. The clips were taken on a walk down the Linear Trail in the town of Sykesville, Maryland.
Most scenes were with the 20mm on a tripod, but a few were handheld and/or filmed with the 14-45mm.
Music is “They Move On Tracks of Never-Ending Light” by the group This Will Destroy You.
