Free Baby Stuff

Posted in samples  by: admin
March 15th, 2010

Did you know that you can start stocking up on free baby supplies the moment your baby arrives? It’s true; almost all hospitals supply new mothers an assortment of free products such as lotions, creams, diapers, formula and ointments. Some hospitals will even go so far as to give away diaper bags and bottle bags. This can set you up quite nicely and make you feel a bit more secure as you return home, but what then?

Well, it seems like there are more and more websites offering free samples and products to new mothers and their children. As is the case with most other freebie sites, these websites are loaded down with samples from companies that want to attract the business and brand loyalty of these new moms. Some of these sites are even offering free samples of formula which, as any mom can tell you, can be rather expensive. Many of the companies that offer free products of this nature have e-mail mailing lists where they will mail all registered users of their website specials and offers for free samples and products; it is worth your time to register with these sites for this reason.

It’s also a great idea to randomly check out search engines. Just type in whatever items you need followed by “free”. You’ll be amazed at how much free baby products are out there. Not only that, but if you are able to find multiple sites, you can really stock up. Can you imagine getting enough diapers to last you several months just for filling out a survey or signing up for a newsletter?

Another way to get free baby stuff is to think “outside of the box”. Mothers are instantly going to think of clothes, diapers, bottles and formula. But because of this, other opportunities for free products sometimes go overlooked. Here are a few freebies that are often available but get overshadowed by necessities.

Photos – Many photography studios offer free photo sessions for your baby. They do this in the hopes that as your child grows, you will return to them for future photography needs. This is a great resource for sending pictures to family and friends without having to opt for a more expensive option like the often overpriced hospital pictures.

Sippy Cups – While your baby obviously won’t need a sippy cup right away, it is always important to think ahead. Some companies offer free cups for babies and toddlers to test out new mouthpieces or designs. Even if your baby is only one week old, if you see an offer for free sippy cups, by all mean take it!

So there you have it. It seems that everyone else is just as excited about your new baby as you are! Of course, these companies merely want you to choose their brand over others. Still, it is to your advantage as a new mother to take part in any freebie offer for baby goods that comes your way!

Learn the Basics of Building Your Job Search Network

Posted in job search  by: admin
March 15th, 2010

Record unemployment across the nation has made job networking the most sought after skill in America. That is not surprising when studies show that nearly 75% of jobs are filled by people who learned of the job opening by word of mouth. Yet, few job seekers apply themselves to developing effective networking skills. This is difficult to understand when you realize that networking is simply about meeting people and asking them to lend their eyes and ears to your job search. If you wish to develop your networking skills, sit down and make a list of who you know.

Begin your list with your closest personal acquaintances. These people are your ”base” network of family and friends; people you know personally. Your base contacts will connect you to an “extended” network of people you are not well acquainted with; friends of friends, your cousin’s neighbor, and many others. They may not know you personally but through your network they can connect you with job opportunities. A simple example will illustrate this.

Begin with a base network of five people who know that you are looking for work. Within one week each of them tell five others about your job hunt and those five each tell five more. Your base network of five people has now reached over 150 contacts. Each addition to your base network will increase the number of extended contacts many times over. This system will find job opportunities you would have otherwise missed. Your networking goal is to lengthen your base contact list.

Before starting your quest for new contacts, make it easy for them to help you. Know specifically what you want, where you would like to work, the type of work you are looking for, and what help you need. Develop these answers into a 30 second summary of your employment goals that you can smoothly deliver to new contacts. Before going out, practice introducing yourself and transitioning a conversation into your employment goal summary. You want to present yourself as capable and confident. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Chances are, the contact you wish to recruit may want to add you to their contact list.

Now that you are ready to begin networking, take care not limit who you talk with. Talk to everyone. The person behind you in line at the grocery store may be a business owner looking to hire someone with your skills and experience. Networking opportunities are everywhere so look for them and get involved. You may find new contacts in volunteer groups, book clubs, school sporting events, PTA meetings, fundraiser events, civic groups; the list goes on and on. Wherever people are gathered you will find networking opportunities.

In this busy day-to-day life, staying in touch with your network contacts is essential. Follow up on new contacts by sending a hand written thank note. Everyone likes to be thanked for their help and this personal touch will help to firmly plant you in the person’s mind. For established contacts, an occasional email, call or note help them to keep you in mind. Persistence can be a virtue, but always exercise discretion and tread lightly. You do not benefit from contacts who may feel annoyed or badgered by overly persistent job enquiries.

In a job market that is flooded with résumés effective networking will connect you with more job leads in less time. If networking does not come naturally for you, then practice your introduction and employment goal script until you sound smooth and natural. This may be difficult at first, but it will get easier with practice. Remember that jobs seldom go to the candidate who knows the most about the job. Rather, jobs often go to the candidate who knows the most about getting hired. Networking is popular because it works and it can work for you.

Returning Workers Resume – 3 Special Tips To Write The Best Resume

Posted in resume  by: admin
March 15th, 2010

People temporarily withdraw from the workforce due to planned or unforeseen events in their lives. Returning workers find it difficult to write their resumes because there are large or small gaps in their work histories, a fact that unnecessarily concerns a lot of people returning to the workforce.

The good news is that returning workers don’t have find the task of writing an impressive resume difficult. All you need to do if you are a returning worker is to plan and organize the information on your resume differently.

1. Avoid the Traditional Style of Resume Writing

Returning workers had better avoid the traditional style of resume writing in which the work history is written in reverse order. The functional style of resume writing is the best for them.

To explain further, the traditional resume gives the details of the most recent job held first while the details of the earliest jobs are provided later in the list. If a returning worker follows this method, he or she will be unnecessarily highlighting the gap in employment in a condition where this gap had better be minimized.

The best style of writing a resume for a returning worker is, therefore, the functional style, in which you list your skills beneath a general topic. For example, here is a list of accounting skills:

2. Accounting Skills
Preparing ledger balances for sales and purchases on a daily basis
Verifying federal and state tax ledgers and audits
Managing accounts payable

In the functional format of resume writing, you don’t have to list the companies you have worked for. Some employers might find this a little confusing. So, you could add a few details about the company you worked for along with your list of skills.

In the traditional style of resume writing, the skills are placed at the end of the resume just after the actual work history. Returning workers could place their skills first and follow this with the actual work history and skills related to the work history.

3. Explain the Gap in the Work History

According to job portals, a cover letter that briefly states the reason for the gaps in employment will help prospective employers understand the applicant better. However, keep the statement as brief as possible without making it seem that you are trying to gain sympathy or become too personal. An example for such a statement would be: “I had temporarily withdrawn from the workforce from 1997 to 2004 because I was studying for a degree and taking care of my child.”

Providing a reason for the gap in your work history is much better than just omitting to provide any explanation. Such an omission might mystify your prospective employer. On the other hand, elaborating on your reason by giving too many personal details embellished with your personal opinion on how parents should monitor the growth of their young children might just annoy your prospective employer and give him or her a bad impression of you.

Alternatively, returning workers may discuss the reasons for withdrawing from the workforce when you are called for an interview, instead of mentioning it in their cover letter. The choice is theirs.
